Do you remember last year when I made my sister Sugar Free Brownies for her birthday because she was doing a no-sugar January – on her birthday?!?. Well, here we are again in the exact same position. She’s doing it again! This time its no bake sugar free treat – sugar-free truffles.
Sugar free doesn’t mean taste free.
Now, if you’ve ever met my sister you’ll know that she’s tiny. But the sugar-free thing isn’t about weight – she looks after her teeth and that’s why she regularly goes sugar-free and only treats herself at the weekends.
I needed to be inventive for this January birthday.
Because I love how these little powerballs look in the sweetie boxes, I made some that look like truffles but without a hint of the sweet stuff. Instead, I reached for some of her fave flavours – Mejol dates, hazelnuts and almonds. All yummy in my books.
I rolled them all out and decided to make a chequered board effect by dusting half in ground almonds and I left the rest naked. I think if I made them again, I’d roll some in cocoa powder. There’s no sugar in cocoa powder!

Happy Birthday Balls of power
My sister loved them. Sugar-free birthday treats were well worth making all over again (did I mention I took some to Christmas lunch last year because I knew my in-laws would have tons of chocolate – again they went down well) I love making sweet treats for family’s birthdays. I mean Sugar free truffles made with dates and nuts – who wouldn’t want them.
Notes
These power balls stay soft so avoid handling them too much. Use plastic or silicon tongs to pick them up when placing in a gift box or on a plate to serve.
They stay fresh for two days so don’t leave them haning around.
Ingredients
- – 80g Medjool dates (6 to 7 dates), pitted
- – 30g sultanas (2 tablespoons), soaked in just boiled water for 30 minutes, then drained
- – 120g whole hazelnuts (1 cup)
- – 100g almond flour (1 cup plus 2 tablespoons)
- – Extra almond flour or unsweetened cocoa powder, for dusting
Instructions
- Place the hazelnuts in a food blender and pulse until ground.
- Place the dates and sultanas in a food blender. (You can push them through a sieve if you don’t have a blender). Pulse until you have a paste.
- Add the fruit to the ground hazelnuts and add the ground almonds. Blend until combined into a wet dough
- With a rolling pin roll out the mixture so it’s flat. You can ensure that the power balls are all the same size by using a cookie cutter to create even amounts to roll.
- Roll each cut piece into a ball. Roll each ball in either cocoa or ground almonds or leave naked.
- Place in a presentation box.
- In a bowl mix all the dry ingredients with the date paste until it becomes a dough.
- If you need to toast the cashews – chop them up into small pieces and place them on baking paper on a baking tray in the centre of the oven at 180℃ for 5-10 minutes. Leave to cool before adding to the mix.
- Use tea spoons to scoop out around 15g of dough and roll into balls in the palms of your hands.
- Place on baking paper to firm up.
- Enjoy.
