So, have you seen the trend for naked cakes yet? I really love the look of them but they do have a lot of downsides. Firstly there’s no fun with sugarpaste when you make them! Secondly there’s no sugarpaste to hide any mistakes (including wonky stacking or gaps in fillings). And thirdly……. No, I can’t think of the thirdly! You see I love them. The more uneven, messy and squadgily creamed they are the better I think they look! A friend of mine got married last May and she had a naked Victoria Sponge three tier wedding cake decorated with fresh flowers to match her bouquet and it looked so beautiful.
Here are just a few I have added to my Pinterest boards ‘Bakes I like’. What do you think. Is it a trend that will stick around or do you think it’s a passing phase?
I think they’re fab whether they’re a passing phase or not – it’s still yummy cake! My only concern would be that the sponge may dry out a bit.
Yep, you’re right, but then that’s a perfect excuse to eat it all up right away!
They are stunning. Beautiful. I think you’d have to be an expert (like you Emma) to attempt this. Maisie would love them as she’s not a fan of icing! X
I know the feeling. If there’s no marzipan I don’t eat the icing. But I do like how it looks!
Some of them look better than others – I LOVE those purple ones!
But others I’m not sure about, they look a bit unfinished and almost un-professional?
Not something I’m keen to try as there are always plenty of mistakes to cover up 😉
Yep, I get the ‘covering up mistakes bit” too, but I’m strangely drawn to them!
I think they are awesome
They are gorgeous! I like them a lot 😉
I much prefer them! This may be because I’m rubbish at sugarpaste though! I think they look prettier than iced cakes to be honest 🙂
I bet you’d be brilliant at sugarpaste- especially if peanuts were involved!
